Keeping On Top of Pests: Termites

Pests can cause real problems around your home. Last year, termites started to attack the fabric of my wooden home. I was devastated when I realised how serious the problem could be if it was not addressed. I started to panic but my wife calmed me down and told me to ring the local pest control contractor. The contractor came out to my property the next day and treated the wood with a solution which would kill the termites. Thankfully, we caught the problem at an early stage so my home is going to be OK. I hope you like this blog.

4 Ways You are Unknowingly Inviting Termites Into Your Home

Have you noticed scattered wood particles in your house? Seeing random creamy insects walking around your wooden frames? Have you been constantly spraying pesticides but the insects still find their way back into your home? Here are 4 things that you might be doing which are making your home an ideal termites nest.

Leaving Muddy Tools Inside the House

Perhaps you love gardening and every once in a while you go outside to prune your bushes or weed your flower beds. Once the day is done, you place the muddy tools inside your shed until the next time you will use them. This is one reason termites are constantly coming back to your house.

Termites love warm and moist spaces, and the soil or mud gives them just that. If you are afraid of spoiling your tools by constantly washing them, then make sure to scrape off all the mud and wiping the tools before storing them. But as long as the soil is inside your house, termites will find their way back.

Not Drying Your House After Washing

During termite inspections you will notice "moisture" coming up quite often. This is because termites thoroughly enjoy dampness. If your house is part or all wood, termites are always a possible threat. By not drying your surfaces properly after washing, or drying a spillage, you are creating an ideal habitat for termites. The dampened wood provides tasty food and a good home for the little insects and only a proper termite eradication might be able to completely get rid of them.

Wrong Cardboard Storage

Termites do not only eat wood. Cardboard is also a favourite treat for them. Cardboard from gift boxes, to cookie packages, they are all capable of attracting termites. You should therefore store them in cool and dry if you plan on reusing them. If not, throw them away as rubbish instead of letting them pile up and collect moisture within the house.

Gardening Adjacent the House

After a full termite inspection, a technician will likely suggest that you move your garden a few meters from the house. Although you may find that the flowers make the house look prettier, you should also know that having the soil next to the walls and floors of your wooden house is dangerous. Termites will not hesitate chewing on untreated wood and slowly burrowing inside. Without effective control measures, your house may end up collapsing eventually.
