Keeping On Top of Pests: Termites

There is a large range of pests that can pose a problem in your home, from small rodents and tiny insects to larger mammals and even snakes. A pest inspection is the best way to catch problems before they become severe.

1. Droppings

You may never see the pest, but most don't make any effort to hide their droppings. Droppings are typically found near the entrances the pest uses, or where they are feeding or nesting. Mouse and rodent droppings may also be found in the kitchen or pantry, where you may also notice chewed-on packaging and other small damage. 

2. Noises

Different pests make different types of noises. Bumps and scurrying sounds, especially at night, often mean that rodents or other mammalian pests have gotten into your home. You will likely hear these pests in the walls or ceiling. Clicking and low rustling noises in walls can mean insects, such as termites, are causing damage just out of sight. It's best to have any odd noises checked out to determine if the cause is a pest.

3. Frass

Frass is a sign of wood-eating insects, most likely termites. As they carve out their galleries in your home's structure they push out waste materials, which look like little piles of sawdust. These are most likely found on the floor near the walls and baseboards. You may also occasionally find small piles of wings, which indicates that there has been a recent swarm of termites or carpenter ants in your home. A prompt pest inspection is needed to determine the extent of the infestation so it can quickly be handled. 

4. Moults

Snakes and other reptiles can range from harmless to deadly, so often the best option is to keep them away from your home. These pests can be silent and secretive, so you're more likely to know they are present from what they leave behind rather than seeing the snake itself. Snakes moult their old skin regularly, so if you come across a moult it means it's time to schedule an inspection to see if you have an infestation.

5. Damage

Certain types of home damage can provide entrance to unwanted pests of all kinds, from insects to rodents. Cracks in the home's cladding, punctures in the roof, or missing vent covers are common entrance points for pests. Worn-out caulking around window frames and similar penetrations in the home walls are also possibilities. If you notice any of these problems, then it's time to schedule both a pest inspection and repairs.
